Accident data indicates that spatial disorientation (SD) may be a precursor to many general aviation accidents particularly at night or in limited visibility weather conditions. Both Instrument and VFR pilots are subject to both SD and optical illusions that may cause loss of aircraft control. These dangers can be explored safely in a flight simulator to improve the recognition and prevention of SD.
