A study of system and component failure accidents has revealed that a significant number of fatal accidents result from pilots allowing aircraft energy state to decay sufficiently to make sustained flight impossible.    Increasing the awareness of aircraft energy state throughout all phases of flight and how to successfully manage it improves the likelihood of maintaining positive control during an emergency descent, and the ability to execute a successful forced landing.
