Using Trend Information to Identify Ways to Prevent Engine Stoppages in Flight The new AC 20-105C discusses the circumstances surrounding engine power-loss accidents. It provides recommendations on how, through individual effort and consideration, those accidents can be prevented. Although piston engine reliability has dramatically improved over the decades, accidents due to engine stoppages still occur at a disturbing rate. We'll examine the various reasons this happens and what we can do about them, including: Pilot Training Deficiencies Inadequate Preflight Inspections Fuel Contamination Misfueling Fuel Bladder Tanks Exceeding Recommended TBO's Poor Operating Technique Maintenance Factors We'll then look at how trend monitoring programs can pinpoint issues for further action.
