Successful completion of either an FAA medical certificate or BasicMed certificate requires much the same preparation as we do before we initiate a flight! The pilot needs to decide what type of medical certificate is required to meet her/his needs, preflight the exam by organizing the medical history and providing any information necessary for Special Issuance (if needed) and, if in doubt, asking questions from the AME or physician before the exam. Randy Corfman, PhD, MD, AME, is a scientist, physician, aviation medical examiner and pilot who incorporates his love of practicing medicine with his love of aviation. A 9000 hour commercial rated pilot, he holds instrument, multiengine and seaplane ratings. He has flown his Cessna T210 across the upper Midwest to provide onsite consultations for 30 years, and a Piper Super Cub for real flying . Randy grew up on a Kansas farm, watching airplanes flying overhead into and out of Wichita for as long as he can remember. He serves as an aviation medical examiner, in addition to his practice as a reproductive endocrinologist. Randy hosts Medical Matters on Supercub.org, a forum in which a variety of medical topics are discussed, as they relate to aviation. Randy is a frequent presenter at aviation conferences and EAA chapters, including AirVenture, the Minnesota Seaplane Pilots Safety Seminar and the Montana Aviation Conference. He is president and founding member of the Minnesota Pilots Association and a long term member of EAA and AOPA. He is a co-leader of the New Holstein Taildragger Fly-in in New Holstein, Wisconsin. He writes a monthly column entitled Hangar Flying , in Minnesota Flyer magazine, on behalf of the Minnesota Pilots Association. Randy s wife, Julie, and their five children and seven grandchildren appreciate and enjoy aviation. He is looking forward to getting his grandchildren into the friendly skies.
