Oh, Snap! My Tail Boom Separated from the Fuselage Now What? At 5:00 pm on Jun. 8, 2022, a highly experienced Bell 407 air tour pilot and his five passengers departed Kona International Airport (PHKO) for what was sure to be an unforgettable experience an airborne view of the Big Island of Hawaii and its majestic volcanic activity. Twenty-six minutes later, their world was turned upside down, literally. The first hint of a problem was a violent and uncommanded forward pitching motion so aggressive that it knocked the pilot s headset loose. What was that? thought the pilot. He didn t have time to figure it out. This presentation is offered at the HAI Rotor Safety Challenge at HELI-EXPO 2024. These sessions are FREE to all HELI-EXPO 2024 registered attendees and exhibitors. Attend at least six Rotor Safety Challenge sessions at HELI-EXPO 2024 and receive a certificate of recognition for completing the 2024 HAI Rotor Safety Challenge.
