This discussion looks at some tools and methods that pilots use to assist with decision making and risk management. The emphasis will be on how the human brain perceives and processes sensory input in situations where decisions must be made immediately, without analyzing alternatives, using Heuristics and Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) methods. We will also look at how subconscious cognitive biases might adversely influence our rapid, informal decision-making processes and potentially undermine the likelihood of a safe outcome. Kurt Kleiner has been flying since 1988 and is an active FAASTeam Representative and CFI with 3,700 hours of dual instruction given over the past 17 years. He is a retired Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Fire-Aviation Manager who now flies fire reconnaissance and detection missions during the summer fire season for a Part 135 operator on a US Forest Service contract in western Montana. He also remains current and active 3-5 weeks/year as an Interagency Fire Airspace Coordinator who designs, modifies, and manages Fire TFRs on behalf of several regional Fire Dispatch-Coordination Centers and large fire Incident Management Teams throughout the west. Outside of work, he also enjoys rock climbing, skiing, skydiving, mountain aerial photography, and flying sailplanes, floatplanes, and tailwheel aircraft when able.
