Flying into and out of backcountry airstrips safely in more than practicing soft-field takeoffs and landings. The Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF) is a 501(c)(3) organization that has saving, creating, maintaining, and even buying backcountry airstrips for 20 years, some right here in the Midwest. Without the enabling work of the RAF, your recreational opportunities - whether cross-country or backcountry - will continue to diminish as airfields are closed or their use is restricted. Earning your pilot certificate wasn't easy. Creating new airstrips isn't easy either. Nothing worthwhile ever is. Find out more about how they do their work, and maybe you just might want to be a part of this! Speaker Bio: Mike Purpura has been flying since 1984 mostly in tail wheel aircraft. His 170B has taken him across the US, Canada, the Arctic Ocean, and Tuktoyuktuk, NWT. He has been with the RAF since 2007. He can be reached at: mpurpura@TheRAF.org.
