This review of the National Airspace will take an entertaining and enlightening approach by looking at some history and trivia and by explaining why some Airspace is depicted on Sectional Charts in an odd manner that seems to defy logic. We will also look at various types of Special Use Airspace including some that are not visibly depicted on charts that might be of concern to pilots since they are largely unknown. Kurt Kleiner has been flying since 1988 and is an active FAASTeam Representative and CFI with 3,700 hours of dual instruction given over the past 17 years. He is a retired Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Fire-Aviation Manager who now flies fire reconnaissance and detection missions during the summer fire season for a Part 135 operator on a US Forest Service contract in western Montana. He also remains current and active 3-5 weeks/year as an Interagency Fire Airspace Coordinator who designs, modifies, and manages Fire TFRs on behalf of several regional Fire Dispatch-Coordination Centers and large fire Incident Management Teams throughout the west. Outside of work, he also enjoys rock climbing, skiing, skydiving, mountain aerial photography, and flying sailplanes, floatplanes, and tailwheel aircraft when able.
