AMT Credit Available! It is in mechanics self interest for pilots to be successful, and safe, when they fly. We have influence when pilots take their airplanes on that first flight after an overhaul. We offer advice and guidance and it is to our benefit to give good advice. We ll look at two accidents which were exacerbated by both pilots failing to notice that a flight control was operating in reverse during the preflight inspection and pre-takeoff check. We ll discuss items you might recommend your customers add to their checklists after maintenance, as well as the suggestion that when preparing to fly for the first time after extensive aircraft maintenance the pilot needs to be very alert for oddities. A thorough review of the work performed must take place between the mechanic and the pilot to ensure that the pilot knows what was maintained, replaced, disassembled, and reassembled and what needs to be checked. The mechanic must reinforced to the pilot that they have a specific job to do during the flight, and it is not for a joy ride nor to be used as the first leg of a cross-country.
