In this presentation Chris will discuss the evolution of Cirrus Aircraft and their Collier Trophy Award winning Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) and will include some anecdotes from the more than 100 successful CAPS deployments, saving over 200 pilots and passengers to date. A discussion will be made of the unique Cirrus Vision Jet and its Collier Trophy award winning Autoland system, along with its full envelope Electronic Stability Protection (ESP) system, automated Emergency Descent Mode and other innovative design features. The Cirrus Approach and Embark worldwide training programs will be reviewed, which provide considerable opportunities for pilots to enhance their own operations. Chris Glaeser, Lt Col USAF retired/current Director of Safety, Cirrus Aircraft will provide an amazing recollection of events in his career, including Air National Guard F-16 interception events, 747 operations in the Pacific, Northwest Airlines, glider world high altitude record flight attempts, Black program F-16 flight testing at Edwards AFB, and some insights into some alleged "UFO" events. Last, but not least, he will describe his cameo role in F-104 Starfighter operations and the movie "The Right Stuff". Lt. Colonel Chris Glaeser (ret) began his flying career in 1969 at age 15, when he was offered a ride in a Piper Cherokee. He immediately joined a Boy Scout Aviation Explorer post, soloing in 1970 and the rest is history. A graduate of the USAF Academy, earning "Top Pilot Award" for the class of 1975. Colonel Glaeser flew F-4E's in Europe, with NATO, and was part of the rescue force for U.S. hostages in Tehran in 1980. He was assigned as a F 104 Starfighter instructor pilot for the German Luftwaffe and German Navy, and was the last USAF pilot to qualify in the F-104. This later lead him to fly the F-104 for the movie "The Right Stuff", filmed at Edwards AFB, working with General Chuck Yeager on that movie, actually flying the scene simulating General Yeager's takeoff. He was selected for USAF Test Pilot School and was an exchange pilot for the British Royal Air Force, flying more than 20 different RAF fighter/transport/trainer aircraft. He later performed test flights on many aircraft, including the F-16, F-15E, A-37 and 6 versions of the F-4. During this time he logged time in more than 70 types of military aircraft, and had the "pleasure" of going supersonic in 11 different aircraft (top speed was Mach 2.3, and top altitude of 72,000 ft). He was named commander of the F-16 LANTIRN (Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night) test unit. Many of these night missions resulted in "unacknowledged UFO reports". He left active duty in 1988, serving with the F-4/F-16 Air National Guard Air Defense unit in NY. He was awarded the USAF Aerial Achievement medal for successful interceptions of multiple drug smuggling aircraft in Panama. His final USAF assignment was in the USAF Reserves at Edwards AFB, where he was awarded his second Meritorious Service Medals. He then flew for Northwest Airlines, in the B-727, DC-10, B747 and A-319/A320, ending up as Director of Safety. He is now full time Director of Air Safety at Cirrus Aircraft, having flown 7 models of Cirrus aircraft. He is a lifetime member of the EAA and member of their board safety committee. He is co-author of both editions of the EAA's Flight Test Manual and the author of their Used Aircraft Buying Guide and Transition Training Manuals. He is a recent recipient of the FAA's Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. This event is FREE with entry into GMAG: Register www.mnpilots.org/gmag
