This presentation will focus on anticipating and recognizing changing weather conditions prior to and during cross country flight. Topics will include typical locations of inclement aviation weather (low clouds, icing, precipitation and low visibility) relative to synoptic weather features, as well as local influences of the Great Lakes. The presentation will look at ways pilots can reasonably diagnose the weather prior to flight, as well as ways to avoid or get out of deteriorating weather during cross-country flying. Speaker Bio: Mark Ratzer is a Senior Forecaster with 28 years of operational meteorology experience at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Chicago, Illinois. Mark is WFO Chicago s Aviation Program Leader, and also works occasional operational forecast shifts at the NWS Center Weather Service Unit (CWSU) at the FAA s Chicago ARTCC in Aurora Illinois. As an NWS operational forecaster, Mark s duties are widespread. His aviation experience includes routinely preparing TAFs for local airfields, including Chicago O Hare and Chicago Midway airports. Mark regularly provides unscheduled briefings for local FAA tower facilities, the FAA Chicago TRACON and the FAA Chicago ARTCC Traffic Management Unit as well as occasional questions from airline dispatchers and operations managers. Mark holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Atmospheric Science from Iowa State University.
