Understanding an Aircraft's Worst Enemy The tropical climate of Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and other Caribbean Islands is characterized by high temperatures, high relative humidity and considerable precipitation. If you add to that high levels of airborne salinity, you have the perfect ingredients for high atmospheric corrosion rates. Corrosion is one of the greatest banes encountered by aircraft maintainers based in the Caribbean Islands. Understanding this phenomenon, its many detrimental effects, and how to address them is crucial to General Aviation (GA) Safety. Through numerous case studies, we will take a look at different types of corrosion, the conditions necessary for corrosion to exist, how to properly repair corroded aircraft components and many other valuable topics.
