When Contributing Factors Combine and Lead to Loss of Aircraft Control Loss of Control In-flight (LOC-I) remains one of the most significant contributors to fatal accidents worldwide. LOC-I refers to accidents in which the pilot was unable to maintain control of the aircraft in flight resulting in an unrecoverable deviation from the intended flight path. It is one of the most complex accident categories, involving numerous contributing factors that act individually, or more often, in combination. Although LOC-I can result from a range of issues, including engine failures, icing, or stalls, this presentation identifies what may be the main culprit behind this type of accident, a lack of understanding by pilots of the direct interaction of an airplane with the air molecules. At the end of the presentation, pilots may have a different view of this interaction. About our presenter: Diego Alfonso has 26,000 hours of flight time including 11,000 hours of instruction given. He holds an ATP certificate and is a Gold Seal Flight Instructor. He was Flight Instructor of the Year for the Southern Region and is a former airline pilot, Designated Pilot Examiner, and former FAA employee.
