The Challenge: Shut off your GPSs and VORs, and prove you can you still do a VFR ground-reference flight plan and actual flight! A route of about 110 nautical miles has been defined, to be flown by each airplane, starting and ending on the South Ramp at GMU. Anyone on the airplane for the trip, whether pilot or passenger, can play, a great opportunity to practice their flight planning. Before departing, each player will provide his best estimate of his planes flight time for each of the four legs, from each waypoint to the next: GMU to first waypoint; first to second waypoint; second to third waypoint; third waypoint to GMU the four legs of the planned route. The three waypoints will be visual landmarks appearing on the standard VFR chart. They will be revealed at registration time. Spotters on the ground at each waypoint and at GMU will note and record the time of the over-flight by each airplane. From those times will be calculated the flight time for each leg. Each competitor's score will be the sum of the actual vs. estimated times for each leg. A perfect score would be zero. The lowest score (i.e., the most accurate) will be the winner. For the winner: bragging rights, and a certificate for two free lunches at the Runway Cafe, courtesy of the UAC.
