Unreasonable expectations with respect to aircraft performance have contributed to fatal GA accidents. Flight data monitoring can help to forecast system/component problems before they reach the point of failure. Given our high-altitude environment, we will be discussing how to keep aircraft engines within the normal operating range, not only to reduce the risk of catastrophic failure but to also make our engines last. We will discuss factors contributing to detonation and preignition, and how using flight data monitoring equipment can prevent this from occurring. This presentation will be specific to the engines and airframes used by Sopwith Camel Flying Club and how to set the mixture properly for safe operation.
