Utilize Aerospace Medicine to Mitigate Risk in Your Flight Operations; OTC Drug Risks, Preflight Self Assessment & Basic Med GAJSC study of General Aviation CFIT Accidents found that a significant number of pilot fatality post-mortem examinations detected the presence of pre-existing medical conditions and/or prescription and over-the-counter medication use. Some pilots do not disclose a complete medical history and medication inventory making it impossible for medical examiners to determine fitness to fly. Teaching Points: Discuss the risks with over the counter drugs and not addressing pre-existing medical conditions with your AME. How to conduct a preflight medical self assessment.
