Distractions and interruptions divert a pilot s attention away from their cockpit duties. Aviation requires pilots to multitask, therefore, good cockpit discipline is necessary to manage distractions and interruptions they are faced with such as ATC communications and head-down work. However, distractions unrelated to flying, no matter how brief, jeopardize safety. Crash data indicate personal electronic devices, such as cell phones, contribute to pilot distraction and, in some cases, result in accidents. It is critical that pilots understand and minimize the risks of use of personal devices in the cockpit. A pilot s motto should be, Arrive alive, don t text and fly! WINGS/AMT credit available! To receive WINGS/AMT credit fill out attendance sheet available at the Forum entrance.
