Are you the aviator that flies with an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) on a Technologically Advanced Aircraft (TAA) with "glass" instrumentation? Perhaps the airplane you are flying is equipped with Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS) and/or a Traffic Collision Awareness System (TCAS). Maybe you have access to "synthetic vision" and/or a Heads Up Display (HUD). The fact of the matter is that the modern aviator is constantly processing incredible amounts of valuable information. Manufacturers aim at enhancing safety with these new technologies, and in fact, when properly managed, they do exactly that. Conversely, they can easily distract a pilot during critical phases of flight, potentially compromising safety. On this briefing we will approach how we process information from a human factors perspective and discuss the many benefits and pitfalls associated with the operation of TAA. The discussion will lead us into how to better manage advanced information sources and automation.
